James “Jim” Robert Laatsch, age 67, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
Jim was born on April 21, 1958, in Anniston, AL, to Robert and Margaret (Kriegbaum) Laatsch, who survive in Kalamazoo, MI.
Jim grew up in Kalamazoo and graduated from Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, MI, in 1976, and furthered his education at Western Michigan University graduating in 1980.
When he attended Western Michigan University, he was a member of the men’s gymnastics team and qualified twice for the NCAA Gymnastics Championships. He went on to be an Assistant Gymnastics Coach at the University of West Virginia and University of Kentucky.
Jim loved working with his hands and for most of his life he was self-employed. He refinished wood floors, was a commercial vegetable grower and an automotive repair and restoration mechanic who specialized in vintage Volkswagens.
Jim was known for his kindness and gentleness and was passionate about peace, justice and environmental issues. He participated in work trips to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and also to help preserve the nature community, “Matera” in West Virginia. Jim loved a simple life and stuck to his principles. He loved the outdoors, animals and enjoyed many travels.
The family is grateful to the Waters of Huntington Nursing Home and the Parkview Hospice team for their wonderful care of Jim.
Along with his parents, Robert and Margaret, Jim is survived by two siblings, John Laatsch, Huntington, IN; and Martha Laatsch (Rachid Seklaoui), South Haven, MI.
To honor the wishes of Jim there will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
